VISION STATEMENT
Cultivating Chiropractic and CLA with Vision and Passion
The chiropractic profession changed forever when two of its most respected practitioners, teachers, researchers and leaders, Drs. Christopher Kent and Patrick Gentempo, Jr., joined forces in 1988 to transform chiropractic into a high-tech health care system with the advent of the Insight™ surface electromyography (EMG) technology, the most innovative chiropractic technology used for patient assessment.
Dr. Kent graduated from Palmer College in Davenport, IA, in 1973. Following graduation, Dr. Kent joined the Palmer faculty. He had a passion for teaching and for the next seven years he stayed at Davenport teaching x-ray, anatomy and chiropractic science. While at Palmer, he was elected president of the faculty senate and worked as a principal investigator in the research department, where amongst other projects he extensively researched surface EMG.
In 1979, Dr. Kent left Davenport and moved to Florida to practice full-time. He continued his research on surface EMG and its application to chiropractic patient assessment and care. As a result of this research, Dr. Kent has published numerous papers in popular and peer-reviewed journals.
Acknowledged as one of the brightest minds in chiropractic, Dr. Kent returned to New Jersey in 1990 to continue in-depth research on surface EMG that he had started several years earlier with colleague and friend, Dr. Gentempo. His vision was to develop technologies that would objectively demonstrate manifestations of nerve interference and ultimately provide certainty for chiropractors and their patients. Along the way, Dr. Kent's efforts were recognized as he was the World Chiropractic Alliance's (WCA) "Chiropractic Researcher of the Year" in 1994, and recipient of that honor from the International Chiropractors Association (ICA) in 1991, and was also named ICA "Chiropractor of the Year" in 1998.
In June 2001, Dr. Kent was elected Chair of the United Nations Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Health Committee. The purpose of the NGO Health Committee is to provide worldwide cooperation on issues of health in keeping with the United Nations principles and concerns by providing a forum for the exchange of global health concerns, policies, services and research. Dr. Kent serves as WCA's Main Representative to the Department of Public Information, affiliated with the United Nations.
Dr. Gentempo is a 1983 graduate from Life Chiropractic College. Following graduation, he established a practice in Ramsey, NJ. After several years of a flourishing practice, he started to feel burned out and believed something was missing from his professional life.
He would constantly educate patients on the benefits of consistent chiropractic care and how important it was to get adjusted even in the absence of pain or symptoms, but he wasn't sure what his recommendations were based on. Dr. Gentempo was ahead of the profession in preaching overall wellness to his patients instead of simply "treating" their symptoms. However, he needed a method to show patients that although they may be pain-free, they could still be subluxated.
While in practice, Dr. Gentempo developed an interest in orthopedic and neurological testing and even began teaching this to other chiropractors in diplomate programs. Dr. Gentempo's growing knowledge in this particular area guided him to an extremely important realization - traditional orthopedic and neurological tests do not locate subluxations. This discovery led to even more intriguing questions such as "How do chiropractors know what care patients need?" and "How do they know if patients are responding to the care?"
In early 1987, Dr. Kent visited Dr. Gentempo's practice and introduced him to surface EMG - a hand-held instrument that measures muscle activity and potential. By using this instrument, a chiropractor could look for patterns of muscle activity related to motor nerve function. This instrument was the answer to Dr. Gentempo's questions. Drs. Gentempo and Kent worked with engineers and programmers to create what would become the Insight Subluxation Station ™.
Dr. Gentempo has been recognized as the ICA's "Postgraduate Instructor of the Year" in 1995 and the WCA's "Chiropractor of the Year" in 1998.
Together, Drs. Kent and Gentempo will lead CLA and the profession with a vision and passion that is destined to again change how chiropractic is perceived and practiced around the world. Their progressive thinking and determination transformed chiropractic practice along with the educational process for patients. Their foresight and purpose will bring chiropractic into the mainstream of health care globally. In fact, they are dedicated to creating, "World leadership of health care in a chiropractic model," in their lifetime.
